Wednesday Giveaway — "5 Views on Biblical Inerrancy," Contributions by Mohler, Enns, Bird, Vanhoozer, and Franke
Before I went to seminary and dived deep into hermeneutics I had rather naive assumptions about the biblical text. The popular slogan “The Bible says it, I believe it, that settles it” could have summarized my understanding of the text. While I appreciate what that slogan says about the authority of Scripture—or, as NT Wright suggests, "the authority of the Triune God acting through Scripture—I've since learned it's more complicated than that, particularly the topic of inerrancy.
No doubt, inerrancy of the Bible has been a long-running, often contentious topic among evangelicals, especially as of late. Which is why I'm excited that a new book that addresses it through five contemporary perspectives. Five Views on Biblical Inerrancy represents a timely contribution by showcasing the spectrum of evangelical positions on inerrancy, facilitating understanding of these perspectives, particularly where and why they diverge.
Contributors include Al Mohler, Kevin Vanhoozer, Michael Bird, Peter Enns, and John Franke. Each essay considers:
- the present context and the viability and relevance for the contemporary evangelical Christian witness;
- whether and to what extent Scripture teaches its own inerrancy;
- the position’s assumed/implied understandings of the nature of Scripture, God, and truth; and
- three difficult biblical texts, one that concerns intra-canonical contradictions, one that raises questions of theological plurality, and one that concerns historicity.
All five contributors will appear in a session and panel discussion at ETS. Bible Gateway Blog will live-blog the event, so you’ll be able to follow the discussion in real-time. Add Bible Gateway Blog to your bookmarks and visit on November 19, 2013.
